Lesya Godfrey, born in Detroit in 1984, is an artist whose diverse upbringing inspired her desire to capture reality as she creates it. Her mother’s family escaped a war-torn Ukraine, and her father played football in the NFL. Being raised with legends, lore, and rich cultural traditions fed Lesya’s imagination. Her reality was unlike those around her and she embraced that difference. Art became the language used to share her perspective.Her artistic genesis can be traced back to a pivotal moment in 1987—a transformative experience that planted the seed for her future as a photographer. On the day she was driven to Grand Central Station in New York City. The purpose of this journey was to witness the unveiling of a monumental 60 foot Kodak Colorama, the world’s largest transparency photograph. The subject was her father, captured in action during the Super Bowl—a triumph frozen in a larger-than-life moment.This awe-inspiring moment sparked a profound fascination with the power of photography within the young artist. The enormity of the image, the vibrancy of the colors, and the emotional resonance it evoked left an indelible mark on her impressionable mind. This seminal experience fueled her passion and curiosity for the art form.She continues to be inspired by photography’s unparalleled capacity to capture light and color, which she uses to abstract reality into a poetic realm of boundless imagination. Every image is a testament to her playful spirit, inviting observers to explore the depths of her world-building through the lens of her camera. Lesya Godfrey's creations are not just photographs; they are portals to unseen dimensions, evoking emotions and sparking curiosity in those who encounter them.Lesya returned to New York to study photography at the School of Visual Arts. She currently resides in Los Angeles where she is co-director of Gallery ALSO, an artist-run gallery and studio. In addition to photography Lesya is a multi-dimensional artist who utilizes any means necessary to manifest her vision; she builds immersive installations, paints, and works with sound and video. Her work has been shown in various cities around the world including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Quito, Stockholm, Cologne, Paris, and Berlin.
